# Search with ⌘⌘

> Ask Soda to search its memory.

Your call with Bruce starts in two minutes. You know you promised him something last time, but you can't remember what. Tap ⌘ twice (⌘⌘) on your keyboard, ask "What did I promise Bruce last time we spoke?", and you're ready before the call connects.

## Open the search bar

Tap ⌘ twice, quickly, from anywhere on your Mac, even mid-call. The search bar opens, ready for your question.

You can also move your pointer to the bottom-left corner of your screen and click **Search**. See [Find your way around](/docs/getting-started/find-your-way-around).

To close the search bar, press **Esc** or tap **⌘⌘** again. It stays open when you click into another app, so you can see the conversation as you work.

## Ask a question

Type your question in plain words, the way you'd ask a colleague, and press **Return**.

<Info>
  Soda's answers are tied back to the source, so you never have to wonder where something came from.
</Info>

## Keep the conversation going

Ask a follow-up in the same bar, like "And what did Anna say?" Soda remembers the conversation so far, so you don't have to explain it again.

Closed the bar by accident? Type **/resume** to pick up your last conversation where you left off.

## Say exactly who you mean

Type @ and start typing a name. A list of your contacts and companies appears. Pick one, and Soda knows exactly who you mean. The tag tells Soda who you're asking about. It doesn't stop Soda using anything else it knows to answer.

You can tag more than one person in the same question, for example "What did @Geoff and @Anna agree on pricing?"

Tag someone and press **Return** with nothing else typed, and their profile opens straight away.

<Tip>
  Know two people called Geoff? Tag the right one with @, and Soda won't need to ask for clarification.
</Tip>

## Quick actions

Type / to see quick actions. They're for the moments you want to go somewhere, rather than ask something.

| Type | What it does |
| - | - |
| **/open** | Opens a person's or company's profile. Pick who with @. |
| **/resume** | Picks up your last conversation. |
| **/new** | Opens a new, blank notepad. It shows in the list as **New Notepad**. |

## What search covers

Search covers your calls and emails, and everything Soda has learned from them about your contacts and companies. It goes as far back as your memory does.

It only covers your own memory, plus anything teammates have shared with you. Nobody else's calls or emails appear in your answers. See [Share with a teammate](/docs/using-soda/share).

## Keyboard shortcuts

| Keys | What it does |
| - | - |
| **⌘⌘** | Open or close the search bar. |
| **Esc** | Close the search bar, or stop an answer that's still loading. In the @ or / list, it closes only the list. |
| **Return** | Ask your question, or pick the highlighted name or action. |
| **↑** and **↓** | Move through the @ or / list. |
| **⌘ +**, **⌘ −**, and **⌘ 0** | Make text bigger, make it smaller, or reset it. This is the same setting as your notepads. |

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Nothing happens when I tap ⌘ twice">
    Soda needs the Input Monitoring permission to notice the ⌘ key. Check that it's turned on in [Permissions](/docs/getting-started/permissions#input-monitoring). If you turned it on a moment ago, quit and reopen Soda, because it takes effect after a restart. For more help, see [⌘⌘ doesn't open search](/docs/troubleshooting/command-bar-wont-open).

  <Accordion title="Soda says it took too long">
    You'll see "That took too long, please try again". Broad questions take longer to answer. Ask again, and narrow it down: name the person or company, or add a time like "last month". See [Asking good questions](/docs/using-soda/asking-good-questions) for examples.

  <Accordion title="Soda asks me to sign in again">
    You'll see "Please sign in again." You've been signed out. Sign in again, then ask your question.

  <Accordion title="Soda asks "Which Geoff?"">
    Soda knows more than one person with that name, so it asks rather than guessing. Click the right one, and Soda carries on. If Soda can't find the name at all, it suggests close matches for you to pick from. Next time, tag the person with @ and Soda won't need to ask.

  <Accordion title="The answer isn't what I expected">
